Pittsburgh Chosen to Host World Environment Day in 2010
Pittsburgh will be the North American host city for World Environment Day in 2010, according to an announcement made today by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). The United Nations founded World Environment Day in 1972 to stimulate environmental awareness and action. The theme for World Environment Day 2010 is "Biodiversity: Connecting with Nature." If Pittsburgh strikes you as an odd choice to host a high-profile environmental event, perhaps you still associate Pittsburgh with steel factories belching smoke or, later, as the de facto capital of the Rust Belt when those factories started to close. If so, you've missed Pittsburgh's transformation from an industrial city to a leader in green technology and sustainability. Read more...Pittsburgh Chosen to Host World Environment...

Consumer groups, food packaging companies and a wide range of manufacturers have been waiting for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to finish it's reevaluation of bisphenol A (BPA)--the plastics additive that has been linked to health problems ranging from cancer and diabetes to neurological disorders in children and sexual dysfunction in men--and either issue new safety standards that people can trust or ban the use of BPA altogether. EPA Stops Largest Mountaintop Mining Operation in Appalachia
The Environmental Protection Agency on Friday halted the largest mountaintop coal mining operation in Appalachia ever to receive a federal permit--the first time in the EPA's 37-year history that the agency has used its regulatory power to stop an already approved project. Mountaintop mining is when coal companies blast the tops off mountains to get at the coal underneath, dumping millions of tons of rubble into adjacent valleys, burying streams, contaminating drinking water, and damaging local communities. Are You Happy with How Your Senators and Representative Vote on the Environment?
Want to know whether the two U.S. senators from your state and the U.S. representative from your congressional district are doing enough to protect the environment? One place to start looking for an answer to that question is in the 2009 Congressional Scorecard compiled by Environment America, a federation of 28 state-based, citizen-funded environmental advocacy organization. Every year, Environment America tracks the votes of every U.S. senator and representative on key environmental legislation. The 2009 Congressional Scorecard included votes on $80 billion in clean energy and green transportation funding in the economic recovery act; passage of a comprehensive clean energy and climate change bill in the House; protection of more than 2 million acres of public lands; cleaning toxic poll...

EPA: Greenhouse Gases Threaten Public Health and Can Be Regulated
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) today confirmed that six greenhouse gases definitely pose a serious threat to public health and the welfare of the American people, and are subject to federal regulation under the Clean Air Act. The agency also concluded that greenhouse gas emissions from on-road vehicles are contributing to the threat. The EPA's final endangerment finding--a direct response to the 2007 U.S. Supreme Court ruling that greenhouse gases are pollutants under the Clean Air Act--is based on a comprehensive review of decades of scientific evidence and more than 380,000 public comments collected during the 60-day comment period that began in April when the agency issued its proposed finding. In making the announcement, the EPA also issued a strong statement about ...
